The Engagement Session Guide
The Engagement Session Guide
I promise, it's much more fun than it sounds.
More Than Just Beautiful Photos
Your engagement session is about so much more than creating beautiful photos. It's a chance for us to get to know each other before the wedding, for you to become comfortable in front of the camera, and for the two of you to spend an evening together celebrating this exciting season of life.
By the time your wedding day arrives, you'll already know exactly what to expect. You'll know how I work, you'll feel more relaxed in front of the camera, and we'll be able to jump right into creating beautiful images without the pressure of the wedding timeline.
A little planning now will make everything else much easier. Start with these four simple steps, and the rest will fall into place naturally.

Colorful leaves & cozy textures.
Fall
Fall is one of the most popular times for engagement sessions, thanks to comfortable temperatures and beautiful foliage. It's a great choice if you love rich color and layering outfits with sweaters, boots, and scarves.
Simple, peaceful & timeless.
Winter
Winter has a quiet beauty all its own. Bare trees, neutral landscapes, and the occasional snowfall create clean, timeless images. It may be chilly, but if you don't mind bundling up, winter sessions can be incredibly romantic.
Golden evenings & lush landscapes.
Fresh blooms & soft color.
Summer
Spring
Choosing the Perfect Season
Summer offers full greenery, wildflowers, and long evenings filled with beautiful golden light. Sessions are typically scheduled close to sunset to avoid the afternoon heat while taking advantage of the best light of the day.
Spring is perfect if you love flowering trees, fresh greenery, and comfortable temperatures. The landscape comes alive with color, creating a fresh, romantic feel. Just keep in mind that spring weather can be a little unpredictable, so flexibility is always helpful.

Find the Perfect Location for Your Session
Choosing a location doesn't have to be complicated. Whether you're dreaming of gardens, city streets, open fields, or something completely unique, I've put together a guide featuring many of my favorite engagement session locations, along with inspiration to help you find the perfect fit.
Now that you've chosen your season, location, and date... let's make sure you feel just as confident in what you're wearing.
Simple outfit choices make a bigger difference than expensive clothes ever will. The goal isn't to look like someone else. It's to look like the best version of yourselves.
The tips below will help you choose outfits that photograph beautifully while still feeling natural and comfortable.
What to wear
Instead of wearing identical outfits, think about creating a look that feels cohesive. The best engagement photos come from outfits that complement one another rather than match exactly. Mixing solids, layers, textures, and different pieces creates a look that feels natural and effortless.
Think about your outfits as if they belong in the same story, not as if they came from the same rack. If one of you is wearing something with a pattern, it's usually best to let the other wear a solid. The goal is for your outfits to feel balanced so neither one overpowers the other.
Coordinate, Don't Match
While there's no "right" color to wear, softer, neutral palettes tend to photograph beautifully. They keep the focus on the two of you, work well in almost any location, and create images that won't feel tied to a specific trend years from now.
I generally recommend muted earth tones and understated colors like cream, tan, camel, olive, sage, warm browns, blush, dusty blue, and charcoal. These shades pair effortlessly together and complement most locations throughout the year. Bright, saturated colors can absolutely be fun, but they naturally draw more attention and can sometimes compete with the emotion and connection we're trying to capture.
Choose Timeless Colors
Your location and your outfits should feel like they belong together. Think about the overall atmosphere you're hoping to create, and choose clothing that complements the setting rather than competes with it.
A flowy dress might feel right at home in a wildflower field, while a tailored outfit or blazer can look stunning in a downtown setting. Sweaters and layers pair beautifully with fall foliage, while lighter fabrics feel natural in the spring and summer. There aren't any strict rules, but when your outfits and location share the same overall style, everything feels more cohesive.
If you're ever unsure, I'm always happy to help you decide what will work best for the location you've chosen.
Dress for Your Location
The little details often make the biggest difference in photos. Fabrics with texture and movement, like knit sweaters, linen, lace, denim, suede, or flowy dresses, add depth and interest without distracting from the two of you. Layers like jackets, cardigans, and scarves are another easy way to add dimension and variety.
Just as important is making sure your clothes fit well. Avoid anything that's overly baggy or several sizes too large, especially tops, as extra fabric can appear bulkier in photos than it does in person. At the same time, make sure you're comfortable. If you're constantly adjusting your outfit or feeling self-conscious, it'll show. The best outfits are the ones you stop thinking about once the session begins.
Texture, Movement & Fit
As you shop, look for pieces that capture those same qualities rather than trying to recreate an outfit exactly. The goal is to build a look that feels authentic to you while taking inspiration from the colors, style, and overall mood you love.
A few searches to get you started:
- Engagement photo outfits
- Neutral couple outfits
- Earth tone couple outfits
- (Your season) engagement outfits
Once you've narrowed down a few ideas, I'd be happy to help you choose what will photograph best if you need advice.
Finding Inspiration
An outfit change is completely optional, but it can be a great way to add variety to your gallery. Many couples choose one dressier outfit and one more casual look, giving the photos two distinct styles without feeling like two completely separate sessions.
If you decide to bring two outfits, I recommend starting with the dressier one. Couples are often a little more aware of the camera at the beginning of the session, and a polished outfit naturally fits that feeling. By the end, everyone is more relaxed, making it the perfect time to change into something casual and comfortable.
Keep in mind that not every location has a public restroom or private place to change, so plan accordingly. If you're unsure whether an outfit change makes sense for your location, just ask!
One Outfit or Two?
(Optional)
Hair & Makeup
Professional hair and makeup can be a fun way to make your engagement session feel a little extra special, especially if you're already planning a makeup trial before your wedding. It's a great opportunity to see how your look photographs and make any adjustments before the big day.
That said, it's absolutely not a requirement. Many of my couples do their own hair and makeup, and their photos turn out beautifully. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable, confident, and like yourself.
A few little touches can also go a long way. If you normally wear makeup, apply it just a little heavier than normal so it shows better on camera.
It's also a good idea to bring along your lipstick for reapplying throughout the session.
If you're wearing your engagement ring, giving it a quick cleaning beforehand can make a surprising difference in close-up photos.
Props are never required, and I generally recommend including them only if they have a meaningful connection to your relationship or story. If you're planning to bring something larger, like a classic car, motorcycle, bicycles, or another special item, let me know ahead of time so we can choose the right location and plan accordingly.
I'd love to include them! Just let me know ahead of time so we can choose a dog-friendly location and plan accordingly. I also recommend bringing a friend or family member who can take them home after their portion of the session so we can focus on the two of you for the remainder of your session.
Your engagement ring will likely make a few appearances throughout your gallery. A quick cleaning beforehand helps it sparkle beautifully in close-up photos.
TIP - you can use toothpaste and an old toothbrush.
If you're wearing heels or dress shoes (especially if you aren't used to them), you can bring something comfortable like flip flops or sandals to slip on in between locations.
A small tote or backpack is perfect for holding phones, keys, wallets, lipstick, water, or an extra pair of shoes. It keeps phones and keys out of pockets and makes it easy to stash things between photos.
A few days before your session, try on your complete outfits, including shoes, accessories, and the undergarments you'll be wearing. It's the easiest way to catch fit issues, visible straps, wrinkles, or anything else you'd rather discover at home than five minutes before your session.
The Little Things
One last thing...
Your engagement session is about more than creating beautiful images. It's our chance to get to know each other before your wedding day, figure out what feels most natural for you, and build confidence in front of the camera.
By the time your wedding arrives, you'll already know what to expect, which prompts you enjoy most, and how I work. That means less time worrying about photos and more time simply enjoying your day together.
TRUST THE PROCESS
Here's what most couples don't realize...
Most of the time, I won't ask you to smile directly at me (don't get me wrong, we'll absolutely get those classic "fridge photos" for Mom and Grandma!). Instead, I'll encourage you to focus on each other through conversation, movement, and little prompts that create real interactions.
Those genuine moments almost always become the favorite images in your gallery because they don't just look like you... they feel like you.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO LOOK AT THE CAMERA
Don't be surprised if...
Some of the prettiest spots aren't the ones you'd expect. If I see beautiful light or an interesting background, I may suddenly stop and say, "Let's try something right here."
Trust me! Some of my favorite images have been made in places couples would have walked right past. Beautiful light is worth following.
WE CHASE THE BEST LIGHT
The best part?
The best engagement photos don't come from perfect posing. They come from genuine moments between the two of you.
We'll spend most of the session walking, talking, laughing, and exploring together. Think of it less as a photoshoot and more as an evening together where I just happen to be documenting it.
IT may FEEL MORE LIKE A DATE
What to Expect
Here's a secret...
If you've ever thought, "We're going to be so awkward," you're in good company. Almost every couple tells me some version of the same thing before we begin. The truth is, you don't need to know how to pose or have any experience in front of a camera.
My job is to guide you every step of the way. I'll give you simple prompts, natural direction, and plenty of encouragement, so you can stop worrying about what to do and simply enjoy spending time together.
Everyone Feels Awkward at First
Before your session
Relax and enjoy yourselves!
Plan to arrive 5-10 minutes early.
Bringing your dog or special props? Let me know in advance.
Bring Appropriate undergarments & comfortable walking shoes.
Pack a small bag.
Clean your engagement ring.
Try on your complete outfit.
The weather forecast is one of the most common concerns I hear, but it's rarely something worth worrying about weeks in advance.
Because the weather changes so quickly in our area, I don't even start paying close attention to the forecast until about two days before your session. Looking any earlier is usually more frustrating than helpful!
If, the day before your session, it looks like the weather may impact your experience, I'll send you a text so we can talk through the options together. We'll decide whether it makes the most sense to move forward or choose a different date.
My goal isn't just to create beautiful photos. I want you to genuinely enjoy the experience, too. Sometimes that means embracing the weather, and sometimes it means waiting for a day that's simply more comfortable.
WHAT IF THE WEATHER DOESN'T COOPERATE?
As a general guideline, I recommend at least considering a reschedule if:
- Temperatures are below 50° (unless you're intentionally hoping for a winter look)
- Temperatures are above 80°
- Humidity is above 60% (especially if you're worried about frizzy hair)
- Sustained winds are over 15 mph
These aren't hard rules, and everyone's comfort level is different. Some couples love cozy winter photos, while others don't mind the heat at all. In almost every situation, the final decision is yours.
The only time I'll require a reschedule is if the weather would be unsafe, such as severe thunderstorms, lightning, or other hazardous conditions.
And one more thing... rescheduling truly doesn't bother me in the slightest (it's just part of being a photographer), so please don't feel bad if you want to hold out for a "perfect" day. I'd much rather spend the time photographing you on a beautiful, comfortable day than have you trying to smile through weather that makes you miserable. The more comfortable you are, the more natural your photos will feel.
Comfort comes first...
When should we consider rescheduling?
THESE CONDITIONS DON'T WORRY ME
Some weather conditions sound much worse on a forecast than they actually are. In fact, some of my favorite engagement sessions have happened on days that looked less than ideal.
Cloudy skies create soft, flattering light and are often a photographer's dream. Bright sunshine can absolutely be worked with, and fog can create a beautiful, romantic atmosphere that's impossible to recreate.
Even a little breeze isn't always a bad thing. It can add movement to dresses, hair, and the landscape, creating images that feel full of life.
The forecast is just one piece of the puzzle. Rather than focusing on the weather app alone, I'll be considering the location, time of day, lighting, wind, humidity, and your overall comfort before making any recommendations.
Some of my favorite galleries have come from days that looked questionable on the weather app.
Don't judge the forecast too quickly...
I could photograph the exact same location every week of the year, and almost every session would look different. The weather, lighting, season, and atmosphere are constantly changing, and that's part of what makes every session unique.
If you decide to move forward in less-than-ideal conditions, I'll absolutely do everything I can to create beautiful images. Just keep in mind that weather naturally leaves its mark, and some effects simply aren't possible to edit away without making the images look unnatural. Things like excessively windblown hair, frizz, perspiration, red noses from the cold, watery eyes, or damp clothing may still be visible in your final gallery.
If those things don't bother you, they don't bother me either. I simply want you to know what to expect so you can make the decision that's right for you.
One last thing...
WEATHER LEAVES ITS MARK
Remember...
The best engagement photos aren't about perfect outfits or perfect weather. They're about the two of you.
CHOOSE A PLACE THAT FEELS LIKE YOU
The best engagement session locations aren't necessarily the most popular ones. They're the places that feel authentic to the two of you.
Maybe that's your favorite park, a downtown area you love exploring, a family property, your college campus, a cozy coffee shop, or simply somewhere with beautiful scenery. Your engagement photos should tell a little bit of your story.
If you aren't sure where to start, don't worry. I have plenty of favorite locations and I'm always happy to make recommendations based on the style you're hoping for.

BROWSE MY LOCATION GUIDE
I've put together a guide featuring many of my favorite engagement session locations throughout Central Pennsylvania, complete with photos and notes about each one.
Whether you're looking for gardens, architecture, overlooks, fields, downtown streets, lakes, or something completely unique, it's a great place to start narrowing down your favorites.
Permits & Private Property
Some locations require photography permits or permission to use the property. If you're choosing your own location, please check ahead of time.
Weekday Evenings
If your schedule allows, weekday evenings are often a great choice. Popular locations tend to be quieter, parking is usually easier, and we'll often have more room to explore.
Golden Hour
Most engagement sessions begin about 2 hours before sunset when the light is soft, warm, and most flattering. Because sunset changes throughout the year, your session may begin much later in the summer than it does during the fall or winter.
Once your session is over, I'll begin carefully editing your gallery. Your completed gallery will be delivered within two weeks of your session. I'll send you an email as soon as it's ready, along with everything you need to view, download, share, and print your images.
Waiting is the hardest part.
Life happens! Just send me a quick text as soon as you can. Since engagement sessions are timed around sunset, arriving late may shorten the amount of beautiful light we have to work with, which can reduce our shooting time.
Absolutely. Every image is thoughtfully edited, including skin retouching, temporary blemish removal, light stray hair cleanup, and overall polish. More extensive Photoshop requests are handled on a case-by-case basis.
While it's not very common, if you have two locations you love that are reasonably close together, I'm happy to incorporate both into your session.
Yes! You'll receive high-resolution digital images with a print release, so you can download, print, and enjoy your photos for years to come.
Don't worry... that's actually pretty common! I keep engagement sessions relaxed and natural, with plenty of movement and conversation. By the end of the session, even the most reluctant partners usually tell me it was a lot less painful than they expected.
Every session is different, but you can expect at least 60 images from a full engagement session. I don't cap the number of photos you receive, so if there are more great images to include, you'll get those too.
